A Punjabi Sikh wedding runs on guest count, and guest count is what makes it run late. As a Vancouver wedding videographer, I plan for people management as seriously as camera coverage, and I have been learning Punjabi so I can actually talk to your family instead of pointing a lens at them. The part that matters most happens before the camera rolls, when your relatives decide whether they trust the person filming them.
If you are hiring a Vancouver wedding videographer for an Indian wedding, here is the part nobody puts in a package list. The footage is downstream of whether your family is comfortable.
Why Does It Matter If Your Vancouver Wedding Videographer Speaks Any Punjabi?
Let me be straight about my Punjabi first, because I do not want to oversell it. I am not fluent. My pronunciation is maybe intermediate. My vocabulary is closer to beginner. I have been learning on and off for about a year, and right now I take two half hour lessons a week.
I am not learning it to sound impressive on a discovery call. I am learning it because I want to be able to talk to your family.
A few days into a pre-wedding week, I walked into a living room that was complete chaos. Our bride’s dada ji was sitting in the middle of it. Eighty five years old, and I had not met him yet.
So I put myself out there. Tuhada ki haal hai? How are you doing?
He answered. I told him I was doing well too. Me ve teeka.
That was the whole exchange. Seven words, badly pronounced.
It changed how he was with me for the rest of the week. An eighty five year old man who had no reason to be comfortable around a stranger with a camera decided I was alright. And once he was comfortable, he stopped performing.
What Changes When Your Family Trusts the Person Filming?
Everything you actually wanted from your film.
Every couple says a version of the same thing on a discovery call. They want real candids. They want the moments between the moments. They do not want everyone going stiff the second a lens points at them.
Here is the problem. You cannot direct that, you can only earn it.
People act like themselves around someone they are comfortable with, and they perform for someone they are not. No amount of equipment fixes that. A longer lens does not make your uncle relax. It just means you are further away when he does not.
So the real work on a Punjabi wedding starts before I am rolling. It is whether I bothered to learn how to greet your grandfather.
What Do Couples Underestimate About Filming an Indian Wedding?
The guest list. Not what it costs, what it does to the day.
The number of people invited to a Sikh wedding is the single biggest factor in how that day actually runs, and it is the main reason things run late. Three hundred people do not move like eighty people. A room does not clear because someone announced it. A family photo scheduled for fifteen minutes takes forty, because there are more relatives than anyone counted and three of them are mid conversation across the hall.
None of that is a problem. It is what a big wedding is. But it is only not a problem if the people working your wedding planned around it instead of being surprised by it.
So ask whoever you hire how they handle a room of three hundred people running forty minutes behind. If they have done it, they will have an answer ready.
Why Does People Management Matter as Much as Camera Work?
Honestly, part of my job at a wedding this size is being a pseudo wedding planner.
Not the real one, and I stay out of the actual planner’s way. But when a schedule starts slipping, somebody has to keep things moving, and often the people holding cameras are standing closest to wherever the hold up is.
This is where one team for photo and video does real work. My photographer and I have the same two priorities in the same order. We want you to have a good time, and we want the day to stay on schedule. We are talking to each other the whole time, so when something runs long on one side of the venue we both know, and we are not pulling you in two directions to make up lost time.
Two separate companies can absolutely do this well. They are just solving it in real time with someone they met that morning.
You can see how I approach both sides of this on my Vancouver wedding videographer and photographer page.
What Does a Multi Event Punjabi Sikh Wedding Ask of a Videographer?
Days, not hours. With a different kind of relationship than a single day wedding.
By the third or fourth event you are not the vendor anymore. You know which auntie runs the room. You know which cousin is going to make everyone laugh and which one quietly disappears when a camera appears. That knowledge is only available to someone who was there for the whole thing, and it is the difference between a film that shows your wedding and a film that shows your family.
Navjeet and Pavan took this further than most. They flew us out to Lake Como for part of their celebrations. You do not do that with someone you hired off a package list. You do that with someone you have already spent a week with.
Where Can You See a Vancouver Wedding Videographer Film an Indian Wedding?
Watch Navjeet and Pavan’s next day edit
A next day edit means they watched a cut of their own wedding before the celebrations were even finished. Their family watched it together, in the room, while it was all still happening.
So before you compare packages, ask a different question. Not what gear is coming or how many hours are included. Ask whether the person filming your wedding will know your grandfather’s name by the end of it.
